Basketball, Golf, and Tennis Shoulder Pain from Overtraining

Yesterday I was working with a basketball player who was experiencing a tight shoulder during his shots. One of the common issues we see is when a person practices either with compensated form, or just over trains. This is what was happening here.

He was feeling the pain when his arm was flexed. So, you can see in the video one of the things we did to give him an immediate, measurable improvement was to to take his arm out of flexion. We moved it into extension and instead of working the muscle, we worked the nerve. We did this three different ways, two of which are in the video.

This resulted in an immediate improvement. If you have a similar issue with a sport like basketball, tennis, or golf. You can try these drills they may work great for you. But if they don’t, try not to get frustrated. For any training program or technique, it has to be customized to the feedback your nervous system is displaying. It is entirely possible that these drills may make your game worse.

To test them first pick a fundamental movement from your sport. Something you do without thinking like throwing or hitting a ball. Do it a few times to warm up them measure either your range of morion, speed, or accuracy. Do the first drill, then reassess. Do the same thing for the second drill. Only put the effective drills into your training.

We love working with athletes. If you have a specific skill you want to improve, or your sport in general come see us.
