The Big Picture

Taiso means “exercise” in Japanese. We offer small group fitness classes, personal training, and adult martial arts in the Proctor District of Tacoma.

Why did you start Taiso?

I want to give my clients the coaching and expertise that I would’ve wanted my Mother to have when she was younger. I watched her yo-yo diet take fat loss pills, count calories and buy exercise videos, with no long term benefit. She had two young girls to take care of, a job and the pressures of our society to “look perfect” while doing it all. I think there is a better way, I think a fitness facility that’s focused on education can get that person real advice for where they are NOW and help them make small but lasting changes. Those small changes give them, more energy, more creativity and permission to be and feel happy.

What is unique about Taiso?

People are more complex then a one size fits all solution, we give our clients a method where they can check in with their bodies get good bio-feedback and make intelligent decisions for their heath and wellness.

I don’t want people to sacrifice their health to look a certain way, I would like instead to give people real tools that can make them healthier, more relaxed and happier people who also happen to love the way they look.

I want people to want more from their fitness facility then just a “good workout” I want them to want a place that can help them be resilient to this world and give them permission to love themselves.

What do your customers value most about Taiso?

We as consumers can be caught up in the ideas of perfection, hoping when we look as certain way then we’ll be good enough. Our customers are a community of people who know better then that, who knows the best parts of life are having experiences with the ones they love. And the more athletic or fit a person is only means the more adventurous and exuberant those experiences are.

What are the future goals for Taiso?

My goals for my business is to continue to thrive as an entrepreneur so I can live my life by my core values and my clients can also have the courage to do so too. Its not easy educating the public about their health getting them to have the conviction that this body they have is the only tool they have to affect this world and they must protect it. Its not easy prioritizing relaxation, making time and space for daily playful movement or committing ones self to unconditional self love, but I’m here as an example its worth it, your worth it. Be courageous.

The science behind complete health & fitness

How we move and how we recover have a huge impact in our overall health and performance. In fact, everyday our movement is either moving us closer to, or farther from, optimal health.

No part of our bodies move in isolation. So any repetitive movement in the body can lead to unexpected changes in other parts of the body.  Also, any traumatic single event, such as a fall or auto accident, can lead to change as well.

This is because the brain is in control of everything we do.  But our brain is also influenced by everything we do. If you practice doing something well, your brain adapts to help you do it even better. But if you practice doing something poorly… guess what?  That’s right, your brain helps you get really good at poor movement.

Our brains have two primary functions. First and foremost is survival through prediction and pattern recognition. The second is performance. Given a choice, the brain will always choose survival over performance.
