Whether you play golf, tennis or just want to be in better shape vision plays a vital part in our performance. In this video the vision assessment measures eye convergence.

Vergence allows you as an athlete to shift the distance at which you are focusing quickly. This is especially important for everyday activities such as driving, or watching a child while making lunch.

If you are playing a sport such a tennis or golf you need to be able to quickly focus on close contact with the ball as well as be able to quickly focus on the long range target.

The standard for the drill in this video is to be able to keep the pen in focus and without double vision all the way to the tip of the nose.

This is just one of the 29 functions of the eyes. And while it is easy to understand how training the eyes will improve your vision and your hand-eye coordination, it may not be intuitive to understand how it impacts other aspects of your movement. If you play tennis our golf try this. Swing your club or racket a few times, do 3-5 reps of the eye drill, and swing again. If you had more speed, flexibility, or power then this is the right drill for you. If you did not get better then this drill should be modified or changed to suit the current requirements of your nervous system.

Check today’s blog video. You will hear Dr. Krupa mention that when he first came to see us he bounced when he ran. This is not uncommon, I see people running regularly who have an excessive bounce. This is often the result of a poor performing aspect of your balance.

Because your brain is not getting enough information from your vestibular system you start to bounce in an effort to over-stimulate that system and increase the available information. When we test and train the specific semi-circular canals in the ear to improve the signal we can eliminate the excessive bounce in the run.

When I talk about balance training and the vestibular system, many people think I am talking about balancing on some sort of ball or beam. Unless you run on a ball or beam this is not how we train. Your body specifically adapts to the demands imposed on it. So vestibular training should closely replicate your daily activity.

Because the vestibular system is higher in the brain’s hierarchy then the proprioceptive system, the brain trusts the vestibular system more. That means all the movement based training in the world will never resolve compensated running form if there is still a vestibular issue.

Yes. Chronic knee pain lives in the brain.  In the accompanying video I give you a simple test to try. If you have chronic knee pain, see how deep you can squat before it hurts. Have someone take a picture from the side.

Now hold on to a sturdy bar or doorframe and squat again. Take a picture and compare the two? I’m sure you were able to squat deeper while holding on to something. Why?

If pain lives in the knee, it should have the same pain response no matter what. Why the difference? Now if your knee is hurting because you got hit with something then the pain will be the same no matter what.  But if the pain is chronic, it lives in the brain and you saw the difference by holding on to something for support. When you held on to something it lowered the perceived stress on the nervous system and the body felt safer.

Once you understand the neurology behind pain and performance you understand there are myriad ways to train the body by training the nervous system. When the body is forced to choose between survival and performance it will always choose survival.

But when your training reduces the threat and improves movement patterns you get out of pain and your performance is greatly improved.

Better Bike Routes!

Earlier this year the city asked for ideas to improve each business district but the limit was $500.  Jennifer submitted a proposal to adopt a program from North Carolina which allowed people on bikes to scan a sign to get the best bike route to a business district.

Unfortunately the program did not work exactly because the signs were not up to code. However, with some persistence and help from Councilman Anders Ibsen bike route signs have been adapted. They do not have the smart phone tie in, but are a great help for new or visiting bike riders.
